MONTEZUMA BEACH AND TOWN
|
|
Montezuma, a former fishing village, is located 25 km south of Paquera at the
southwestern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula. For a place that did not even have electricity
until 12 years ago, it really has grown extremely quickly, shifting from a haunt
for younger, budget tourists to include groups as diverse as honeymooners and
"ecotourists".
What brings everyone here is the astounding beauty of the setting. Montezuma and
the coast south to Cabo Blanco features some of the loveliest coastline in the
country: white sand, dotted with jutting rocks and vertiginous, leaning palms,
and backed by lush greenery, including rare Pacific lowland tropical forest. The
village itself is surrounded by thickly forested hills sliced through by the needle-thin
cascades of waterfalls. Views out into the Pacific are uninterrupted, and are
especially wonderful at night, when the occasional lightning storm illuminates
the horizon and silky waters.
