GANDOCA AND MANZANILLO WILD LIFE REFUGE
Beach at Manzanillo

In the very southeast corner of the country, bordering the Sixaola River and the frontier with Panamá, the little-visited but fascinating Wild Life Refuge incorporates the small hamlets of Gandoca and Manzanillo and covers fifty square kilometers of land and a similar area of sea. The refuge was established to protect some of Costa Rica´s last few coral reefs, of which Punta Uva is the most accesible, with some great snorkelling. There is also a protected turtle-nesting beach south of the village of Manzanillo, and tracts of mangrove forests. This reserve is mostly a secondary forest and it extends almost to the border of Panama. It is an interesting drive from Puerto Viejo to Gandoca and at the end there are beautiful beaches and a bar / restaurant called Maxi that has good food. A boat tour to the hidden lagoon is recommended.
