CAÑO NEGRO WILDLIFE REFUGE
|
|
You can take this one day tour from the Arenal area. The tour takes you by bus
for about 2 hours until you get to the little town Los Chiles up to the north.
In this town you will embark on a boat tour on the Frio River for about 3 hours
with very good chances to spot birds, caymans, monkeys, turtles and sloths. It
is a fascinating trip for nature lovers. The boat tour is not on the Caño
Negro Lagoon itself, but on the Frio River. If the river level allows it, the
trip will include viewing the edge of the lagoon. You will come back on the same
river to Los Chiles and then by bus back to the Arenal area.
Note: If the clients already have Tortuguero in their itinerary, we do not recommend
the Caño Negro Tour because it is very similar.
Caño Negro is situated on the Los Guatusos plain near the boarder with
Nicaragua. An area of lakes and swampy land formed form alluvial sedimentation
make up this wildlife refuge, which has been included on the Ramsar List of Wetlands
of International Importance. The seasonal lake of Caño Negro, some 800
ha in area and 3 m deep, is a damned part of the Frío River. In the dry
season, between February and May, the lake almost completely disappears.
The birdlife is rich and varied. Some of the most abundant or noteworthy aquatic
birds are: anhinga, roseate spoonbill, white ibis, jacana, woodstork, black-bellied
tree duck and the jabiru.
