Famous 5 colones bill!

Allegory to Coffee and Bananas - Aleardo Villa - National Theatre - Costa Rica

The most famous painting of the theater is an allegory to the two most important export products of the country, coffee and bananas. Aleardo Villa ( italian painter ) was not very familiar with our country, so he made a few technical mistakes that made the painting funny and unique. The bananas in the bunch are up side down. The coffee plantations are painted at sea level, what is wrong. The coffee bushes are too small and the women are typical shobby, very elegant nord italian ladies, very different from our coffee pickers. The oxen have the yoke on their necks. Imagine the poor oxen strangled by pulling all that weight. Normally the yoke is tied up to the horns and head. Although he made some mistakes, it is a nice painting and was chosen as a motif for our 5 colones bill. The bill is out of circulation but it can be purchased outside as a collection item.

Arenal Volcano by Night

.

This is the most active and impressive of the volcanoes in Costa Rica. This almost perfect shaped volcano was covered with vegetation before 1968. Just before the big eruption during the year 1968, the people noticed that the cows could not drink water from the Tabacon River because of the rising temperature. After this, the volcano erupted violently covering more than 7 square kilometers ( 4.2 square miles ) with lava. Since that moment the volcano has been erupting daily at different levels of activity. This is one of the greatest spectacles of a visit to Costa Rica. It is incredible to observe and hear an eruption by daylight or by night. Seeing the lava rocks glowing down the hill at night is something you will never forget.

On your way there, you will ride through the heavenly landscape of Lake Arenal, a man made lake that provides water for an hydroelectric power plant and for irrigation in the low lands of Guanacaste province during the dry season.

As an option, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a hiking tour at the surroundings of the volcano, in an overview area called El Silencio.

After that, you will experience the Tabacon hot springs located at the foot of this magnificent volcano. The hot springs have one of the best volcano views and are surrounded by gardens and by a lush rainforest. You will have time to explore the gardens, relax and enjoy the hot springs while keeping an eye on the volcanos activity until it gets dark! After dinner, in that same place, you will return back to the hotels in Guanacaste around 10:00 or 11:00 p.m.

After nightfall, the glow of flowing lava can be seen from several points in the area ( if it´s not cloudy ).

During the tour it is possible to spot toucans, guans, oropendolas, monkeys and coatis.

Once you get to the hot springs you will have access to a locker and a towel to keep your things.

Lunch and dinner and entrance fee to the Tabacon hot springs.

Wear shorts or pants, light clothes, sneakers.

Bring swimming-suit and camera.

The difference between this tour and the Arenal Volcano by night is that this one includes the hike in the rain forest at El Silencio. The Arenal Volcano by night will only visit the Tabacon Hot Springs.
