Famous 5 colones bill!

Allegory to Coffee and Bananas - Aleardo Villa - National Theatre - Costa Rica

The most famous painting of the theater is an allegory to the two most important export products of the country, coffee and bananas. Aleardo Villa ( italian painter ) was not very familiar with our country, so he made a few technical mistakes that made the painting funny and unique. The bananas in the bunch are up side down. The coffee plantations are painted at sea level, what is wrong. The coffee bushes are too small and the women are typical shobby, very elegant nord italian ladies, very different from our coffee pickers. The oxen have the yoke on their necks. Imagine the poor oxen strangled by pulling all that weight. Normally the yoke is tied up to the horns and head. Although he made some mistakes, it is a nice painting and was chosen as a motif for our 5 colones bill. The bill is out of circulation but it can be purchased outside as a collection item.

Caño Negro Wild Life Refuge

.

Caño Negro is located on the Guatusos plain near the border with Nicaragua. You have to drive 70 kilometers north from El Muelle Town until reaching the small town Los Chiles. You will start the boat tour from the small dock on the Frio River.

You can take this one day tour from the Arenal Volcano area. We will pick you up at your hotel to start a drive of approximately 2 hours until you get to the little town Los Chiles up to the north. In this town you will embark on a boat tour on the Frio River for about 3 hours with very good chances to spot birds, caymans, monkeys, turtles and sloths. It is a fascinating trip for nature lovers. The boat tour is not on the Caño Negro Lagoon itself, but on the Frio River. If the river level allows it, the trip will include viewing the edge of the lagoon. You will come back on the same river to Los Chiles and then by bus back to the Arenal area.

An area of lakes and swampy land formed form alluvial sedimentation make up this wildlife refuge, which has been included on the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance. The seasonal lake of Caño Negro, some 800 ha in area and 3 m deep, is a damned part of the Frío River. In the dry season, between February and May, the lake almost completely disappears. The birdlife is rich and varied. Some of the most abundant or noteworthy aquatic birds are: anhinga, roseate spoonbill, white ibis, jacana, woodstork, black-bellied tree duck and the jabiru. You are mostly to see caymans, howler and white-throated capuchin monkeys, sloths, green basilisk, fresh water turtles, iguanas and others.

Our Comments

Although the name of the tour is origined from the Wildlife Refuge which encompasses the lagoon, this boat tour is entirely done in the Frio River ( Río Frío ). Although the vegetation is a gallery forest found mostly on the river edges you can see a great variety of fauna during the boat ride. Recommended specially for people who have not being in Tortuguero. It is not easy to take pictures of the wildlife without a powerful zoom in you camera.
