Famous 5 colones bill! |
 |
The most famous painting of the theater is an allegory to the
two most important export products of the country, coffee and bananas. Aleardo Villa ( italian painter ) was
not very familiar with our country, so he made a few technical mistakes that
made the painting funny and unique. The bananas in the bunch are up side down.
The coffee plantations are painted at sea level, what is wrong. The coffee bushes
are too small and the women are typical shobby, very elegant nord italian ladies,
very different from our coffee pickers. The oxen have the yoke on their necks.
Imagine the poor oxen strangled by pulling all that weight. Normally the yoke
is tied up to the horns and head. Although he made some mistakes, it is a nice
painting and was chosen as a motif for our 5 colones bill. The bill is out of
circulation but it can be purchased outside as a collection item.

Chato Hill Hike |
 |
|
After recollecting all participants from the hotels in the area we will proceed to drive to where the Observatory Lodge is located on the Arenal Volcano slope. At this place we will start our hike through a nice trail covered with a dense rainforest. ( A very good physical condition is required since the hike up and down is long and steep ) The whole hike up and down the hill takes aprox. 4 hours. During the hike you can enjoy the tropical vegetation and wonderful views of the Arenal National Park and of the Chato Hill lagoon. This is a beautiful emerald green rainfall water lagoon inside the extint crater. Swimming is allowed if you feel like. The hike down the hill is done using another trail that descends through another flank of the hill where La Fortuna Waterfall is located. At the end we will have a deserved break to rest before we take you back to your hotel.
The Chato and the Arenal Volcano share an ancient brotherhood. It is located southeast of the Arenal Volcano with a maximum elevation of 3740 feet ( 1140 mts ) above sea level. The volcano consists of a truncated volcanic cone ( reason of its name ), with an explosion crater with a diameter measuring 1640-1804 feet. Inside the crater we find an oblong-shaped lagoon, 820 feet from North to South, and 492 feet from East to West, and at its most 60 feet deep. The volcano covers in total an area of 4 square miles. The seismic phenomena before the 1968 Arenal Volcano eruptions, indicate a close relationship between both volcanos. There has been no volcanic activity registered since colonial times. The most ancient activity has been estimated 38,000 years ago. The pluvial erosion of one of its old lava flows has turned into the beautiful La Fortuna Waterfall located in the oriental flank of the Chato Hill.
