Thrifty Car Rental is a franchise of one of the world's biggest car rental companies in the world, which operates with 1200 offices distributed in 64 countries with almost 6000 partners. In Costa Rica Thrifty Rent a Car operates since 1986 renting cars to the foreign and local market.

Our fleet features more than 700 vehicles including sedans, four wheel drive vehicles, minivans and pick up trucks. We have stations located in strategic spots within the country to give a better and more convenient service to all our customers.

SERVICES

Meet and Greet Service

The customer is welcomed by a Thrifty representative upon arrival at the exit of the International Airport and afterwards escorted in a free shuttle service to the headquarters located only 5 minutes away from airport.

Drop off

We deliver or pick the car rental vehicle of your interest. This service must be requested and confirmed in advance. In the metropolitan area of San Jose this service is free of charge. In other areas the service will have a service charge.

COVERAGES AND CONDITIONS

BASIC COVER ( CDW )
The renter and any additional drivers are absolutely liable for any loss or damage to the rental vehicle, even if someone else caused it or the cause is unknown, whether due to theft, collision, turn over, vandalism, broken glasses or any other cause.  The financial responsibility reduces to the deductible amount according to the car category.
The only exception will be the not covered risks downbelow. The basic cover ( CDW ), also provides the renter or any additional authorized drivers as listed in the rental agreement with automobile liability coverage against third party claims for bodily injury, including death, and property damage resulting from an automobile accident in the THRIFTY vehicle, collision, turn over and theft during the rental period with zero deductible.

ACCIDENT EXCESS REDUCTION ( AER )
By taking this coverage ( AER ) you will have no financial responsibility, in case of accident, damage or turn over. Partial or total theft is not covered with this protection. This coverage is additional to the basic cover ( CDW ). The only exception will be the not covered risks downbelow.  In case of taking both coverages, only US $ 300.00 of deposit with the credit card will be required during the car rental period.

TOTAL COVERAGE PACKAGE ( PPT )
Additional to the CDW ( Basic Cover ) and the AER together, this additional protection will cover 100% of total theft, partial theft, damaged tires, windshield, toll truck and rescue. By taking this coverage  only US $ 300.00 of deposit with the credit card will be required during the car rental period.

ROAD ASSISTANCE ( ERA )
The contract will include automatically the road assistance protection for each rented car. ( ERA ) For this the client has to pay directly to the rent a car US $ 0.99 per day. This protection will cover key reposition  ( inside or outside the car ), tire change, battery start up, and fuel reposition in case of running out of fuel. This coverage is optional and the client has to refuse it before signing the contract if not interested. If the client refuses to take this coverage, the client will be responsible for any charges for the cases mentioned before.

NOT COVERED RISKS
1. Theft or damages to internal or external accesories  ( radio, mirrows, rear-view mirror, carpets, seats, tires, tools, goatees, tire rims, emblems, latchkeys, etc… )
2.  All damages to the vehicle due to bad conditions on public or private roads or caused by obstacles on the road ( any case ) or in case of negligence.
3.  Damages caused to the vehicle when crossing rivers, driving on the beach or estuaries, etc….

VEHICLE LICENSE FEE
$0.95 daily in all vehicle categories, mandatory and has to be paid directly to the rent a car company.

CONDITIONS
Conditions for the driver:
1. No driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
2. Taking good care of the vehicle by checking carefully the fuel level, lubricants and general car conditions.
3. Traffic laws and authorities must be respected.
4. The vehicle can not be taken out of the country.
5. The driver must have a driving license, proper identification, car documents and car rental contract at all times during the driving and during the car rental period.
6. The driver must pay for any sanctions or fines imposed for breaking the traffic law.
7. Taken coverage will not be valid if the rented car is driven by unauthorized drivers by Thrifty Car Rental.
8. In case of an accident, the client is obligated to wait for the traffic police officer and the Insurance Institute representative in order to follow the legal procedures. The client must hand in immediately the traffic police and the insurance report to Thrifty Car Rental representatives. If the accident has taken place far away in the country side, the client needs to declare at the local authorities and present a copy of the declaration at Thrifty Car Rental offices. If not doing so will invalid any taken coverage.
9.  No coverage will apply if the principal or authorized drivers are under the effects of alcohol or drugs. ( injuries, damages, death to third parties or to themselves will not be covered )
10. Thrifty Rent a Car will allow a delay of only 1 hour when returning the car. After this charges will apply.
11. There are pick up and drop off charges where Thrifty Car Rental has no offices or representatives.
12. The driver´s license has to be issued at least one year in advance.
13. Additional driver´s have a cost of US $ 5.00 per day and this must be paid directly to the rent a car.
14. Gps, baby seats, racks and busters can be requested and depend on availability. These must be paid directly to the rent a car.
15. With a minimum of 2 days of rent the rental has free mileage.
16. Driver’s license must be updated as well as passport.
17. Credit or debit card must have profile on it.
18.Currently Thrifty Car Rental has no cellular phone rental!

NEGLIGENCE

What is negligence?

Accidents and / or damages caused by the following:

1. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
2. Speeding or carelessness of Thrifty’s vehicle driver.
3. Violating traffic laws, disrespecting traffic signals.
4. Driving on the beach, into the ocean or through high rivers which may lead water to seep into the engine or damage braking systems.
5. Leaving keys on ignition or doors unlocked while away from the vehicle, parking in areas where burglary or vandalism may be encouraged.
6. Overturning the vehicle due to loss of control caused by speed.

IMPORTANT: When the accident is caused by negligence of behalf of Thrifty’s customer, NO PROTECTION provided by Thrifty is applicable and customer is completely responsible for payment of all damages made to the vehicle.
