| THE
CAPITAL OF COSTA RICA |
|
 |
Although San Jose City was founded in 1737 little remains from
the colonial era. Compared to other capitals of the region, it is more cosmopolitan,
even North Americanized. The city and capital of Costa Rica since 1823 is set
in a wide and fertile valley ( Central Valley ) in the center of the country
at 3800 feet above sea level. The population, including the suburbs reaches
1 million inhabitants. All hotels in San Jose have drinkable water. The city
is divided in streets and avenues. There is a pedestrian avenue in downtown
San Jose with restaurants and stores. The distance between the International
Airport and San Jose is 17 kilometer ( 10,6 miles ). In rush hours it takes
45 minutes to get there.
San Jose´s average temperature is 74° F and may
vary only a little throughout the year. During December, January and February
the temperature can drop a few degrees and a cool breeze is felt at night. We
recommend to take a sweater or wind breaker during this time of the year.
The city has some attractions, entertainment and a very active
laboral life. There are many restaurants, bars and discotheques. The city is
modern and it does not keep many of its old buildings because of the earthquakes
during the past 100 years. The downtown area is small and congested with heavy
traffic and sightseeing is best done on foot. Our opinion is that if somebody
is really interested in seeing the city, half a day will be enough and afterwards
departing will be recommended to take advantage of time and enjoy the real nature
wonders of Costa Rica.
